Exterior view of a Lennar homeWindows and doors provide us with a view and access to the outside world. Like every other component of your Lennar home, windows and doors require ongoing maintenance to stay in ultimate operating condition.

One of the most important tasks to keep your windows operating smoothly is to ensure that the tracks are free of debris. This simple maintenance task should be performed on a monthly basis. You can use a vacuum cleaner with an attachment or a small brush, but make sure to protect your eyes from any flying particles. Using a silicone lubricant along the tracks after you clean them will help ensure smooth operation.

Once a year, you should check all of the hardware around the windows and doors, including the hinges, jambs, sliders, knobs, and locking mechanisms. The screws should be tight and the hinges and locks should operate smoothly. Make sure to check both exterior and interior doors as part of your maintenance routine. Exterior doors and windows should be checked twice a year – spring and fall – to ensure that all of the weather-stripping is fastened tightly and is in good shape. Any cracked or missing weather-stripping should be replaced. Also, be mindful of sharp edges if you have copper weather-stripping to prevent the possibility of cuts.

It’s a good time to check the caulking around your doors and windows at this time, too. If you notice any missing or deteriorating caulk, make sure to read Caulk – A Valuable Tool for Home Maintenance to learn about this handy substance.
